You search Google for reviews, but instead of clicking through to a retailer or a professional review site, you add one word to your query: Reddit. You want to hear from people who actually own the mattress. People who have slept on it for six months, discovered its flaws, and have no particular incentive to recommend it.

That behavior has helped turn Reddit into one of the internet’s most valuable advertising businesses. But now imagine Google answers your question itself, using information gathered from Reddit discussions. You get the advice without ever visiting Reddit. For Reddit, that distinction could be worth billions.

Everhold delivers independent research on businesses, markets, and investing. Net income climbed to $283 million. Adjusted EBITDA reached $402 million, giving the company a margin approaching 45%. Those would be remarkable results for almost any technology company. Yet Reddit’s shares fell roughly 18% in after-hours trading.

Investors weren’t particularly concerned about the quarter that had just ended. They were concerned about the company’s warning that declining search referrals could cause daily active users to fall by a low-double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter if current trends continue. The apparent contradiction points to something important about Reddit’s business. The company has become extraordinarily good at making money from its existing audience. What remains uncertain is how reliably it can attract its next generation of users.

1. Reddit’s growth is coming from monetization, not just more users

The headline growth rate is impressive. But the underlying numbers tell an even more interesting story. Consider how Reddit’s business has developed over the last two years.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" The monetization component also captures changes in geographic mix and non-advertising revenue. But it reveals an essential characteristic of the business. Most of Reddit’s incremental revenue is coming from getting more economic value out of its audience—not merely from expanding that audience.

That raises a question investors should be asking: How much more monetization is still available?

2. Reddit is becoming an advertising machine

Reddit generated $847 million in advertising revenue during the third quarter, a 54% increase from a year earlier. Advertising accounted for approximately 95% of total revenue. The remaining $48 million came from other sources, including data licensing and subscriptions.

Reddit’s advertising advantage begins with the type of activity that takes place on the platform. Instagram is particularly useful for discovering products through photographs and videos. TikTok excels at entertainment and product discovery. Google captures people searching for information or products. Reddit occupies an unusual position between them. Its users frequently discuss products and services in considerable detail, often while actively researching purchasing decisions.

Someone asking whether a particular insurance policy is worth buying is signaling a different kind of commercial intent from someone scrolling through vacation photographs. For advertisers, that distinction matters. An advertising impression is not inherently valuable. Its value depends on the probability that it produces a useful business outcome. An advertiser might willingly pay much more to reach someone actively comparing cybersecurity software than someone with only a general interest in technology.

Reddit is becoming better at converting that commercial intent into advertising revenue. During its earnings call, management disclosed that:

Advertising prices increased faster than impression volumes.

Advertising click volume rose more than 50% year over year.

Reported conversion volume more than tripled.

Revenue from its scaled advertiser channel grew more than 80%.

More than 60% of its advertising business was performance-oriented.

The implications are important. An advertising platform can grow revenue through three basic mechanisms: increasing the size of its audience, showing more advertisements, or generating more revenue from each advertisement. Reddit is demonstrating particular strength in the third mechanism. Better targeting, improved conversion measurement, automated campaign management, and stronger advertiser demand can all increase the prices advertisers are willing to pay.

There are limits, however. Reddit’s reported conversion growth is evidence that its advertising system is generating more measured outcomes. It does not, by itself, establish that advertisers are earning proportionately higher returns. Conversion definitions, attribution, campaign mix, and spending levels all matter. Ultimately, advertisers pay for profitable customer acquisition—not for Reddit’s revenue growth.

3. The American market reveals how much monetization matters

Reddit’s geographic results provide an especially revealing example. In the United States, daily active uniques declined 2% year over year to 50.7 million. Yet U.S. revenue increased 50%. How is that possible? U.S. average revenue per daily active unique increased from $9.04 to $13.82, a gain of 53%. In other words, Reddit generated dramatically more revenue despite serving slightly fewer daily users.

Internationally, the story is different. Daily active users increased 24%, while average revenue per user increased 32%. More importantly, international ARPU remains just $2.43 per quarter. That compares with $13.82 in the United States. Reddit currently generates approximately 5.7 times as much revenue per daily active unique in the U.S. as it does internationally.

Some of this disparity reflects structural differences in advertising markets, purchasing power, advertiser demand, and user behavior. But it also illustrates a potentially substantial opportunity. If Reddit could narrow even part of the gap between international and U.S. monetization, it could grow revenue without requiring comparable growth in its global audience.

The key question is whether the gap reflects an immature international advertising business or markets whose economics are fundamentally less attractive. Those are very different investment propositions. And they cannot be answered simply by applying U.S. ARPU to international users.

4. The economics are unusually attractive

Reddit’s financial model is striking. The company reported a gross margin of 91.5% in the third quarter. For every dollar of revenue, approximately 91.5 cents remained after the direct costs of providing its services. That is an exceptional starting point for profitability.

Unlike a traditional media company, Reddit does not pay professional journalists to produce most of its content. Its users create the posts, comments, product discussions, and community knowledge that attract visitors. Volunteer moderators also perform substantial community-management work. Reddit supplies the infrastructure, product development, safety systems, recommendation technology, and advertising platform that make those contributions discoverable and economically valuable.

This does not mean Reddit’s content is free to operate or that community labor is without cost. Maintaining safety, trust, moderation tools, technical infrastructure, and healthy communities requires substantial investment. But the model allows revenue to expand without requiring a proportionate increase in paid content production.

The result is substantial operating leverage. Between Q3 2025 and Q3 2026, revenue increased by approximately $310 million. Adjusted EBITDA increased by approximately $166 million. That represents an incremental adjusted EBITDA margin of roughly 54%. For every additional dollar of revenue over that period, approximately 54 cents flowed through to additional adjusted EBITDA.

Cash generation is equally notable. Reddit reported $363 million in third-quarter free cash flow, approximately 41% of revenue. Capital expenditures totaled just $1.2 million, reflecting a business that relies heavily on third-party infrastructure rather than owning enormous data-center facilities. By the end of September, Reddit held approximately $3 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities.

However, investors should distinguish adjusted profitability from economic profit available to shareholders. Reddit reported approximately $136 million in stock-based compensation and related taxes during the quarter, which its adjusted EBITDA calculation excludes. Stock-based compensation is noncash when recognized, but it can dilute investors unless offset by repurchases.

Additionally, the company’s effective income-tax rate was only about 2% for the quarter. Its current net margin should not automatically be extrapolated using an assumption of permanently minimal taxes. The business is genuinely profitable and cash-generative. Its headline 45% adjusted EBITDA margin simply isn’t the same as a 45% after-tax economic profit margin.

5. The Google problem

The strongest argument for Reddit is also becoming one of its greatest vulnerabilities. For years, search engines helped users discover Reddit discussions. A person researching a medical symptom, a home appliance, or a vacation destination could encounter Reddit through an ordinary search result. The referral brought that person to Reddit, where they might read additional discussions, encounter advertising, or eventually become a regular user. Google performed an important customer-acquisition function.

Artificial intelligence is changing that relationship. Rather than directing users toward relevant websites, AI-powered search can summarize information and deliver answers directly. Reddit’s content may still contribute to the answer. But Reddit may no longer receive the visitor.

During Thursday’s earnings call, CEO Steve Huffman identified Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode as the company’s leading hypothesis for declining search referrals. He also cited possible changes in Google’s treatment of machine-translated Reddit content. The company reported that search referrals were declining by more than one million per week on average during October, with the trend accelerating from the third quarter.

Management cautioned that, if current conditions persist, total daily active uniques could fall by a low-double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter from a base of approximately 130 million. That warning is conditional, not a forecast that the decline will necessarily occur. Nevertheless, it exposes a structural risk. Reddit does not control the platform through which many users discover its content.

The relationship is especially complicated because Reddit also licenses access to its content to AI companies, including Google and OpenAI. Those agreements create a second potential revenue stream. But they also raise an uncomfortable question. Could Reddit earn money supplying information to AI systems while losing the traffic that makes its advertising business valuable?

The answer depends on the terms of its licensing agreements, the degree to which AI substitutes for visits to Reddit, and whether the company can develop more direct relationships with its audience. Management says licensing negotiations remain active and that future agreements must provide fair economic and strategic value.

The financial disclosures do not establish how much of Reddit’s $48 million in quarterly non-advertising revenue came from any particular AI licensing partner. For now, advertising overwhelmingly dominates the business. Data licensing is potentially valuable, but it has not displaced the importance of getting users onto Reddit itself.

6. Reddit’s next big move: fewer anonymous visitors, more registered users

Management’s proposed response is consequential. Reddit intends to begin testing a primarily logged-in browsing experience in selected international markets during the fourth quarter. It would represent a significant change for a platform historically known for allowing people to access public discussions without creating an account.

The business rationale is straightforward. Registered users can receive personalized recommendations, develop stronger connections with communities, and return more frequently. Reddit can also collect more useful signals for advertising relevance and measurement. And a login requirement makes unrestricted automated scraping more difficult, although it does not eliminate the risk.

There is a revealing number in Reddit’s disclosures. Just 53.5 million of its 130.3 million daily active uniques were logged in during the third quarter. That is approximately 41% of the total. Yet management says its logged-in and app users—the groups that overlap and represent its most engaged audience—account for more than 80% of monetization.

Those figures cannot be used to calculate an exact revenue-per-user comparison between logged-in and logged-out audiences because the reported groups overlap. But the economic implication is unmistakable. Not all users are equally valuable. Someone who arrives from Google, reads one discussion, and leaves contributes far less engagement than someone who opens the Reddit app multiple times a day. That is why the company may be willing to sacrifice some reach in exchange for deeper engagement.

The problem is that anonymous visitors also serve as a source of future loyal users. A login wall can improve engagement among people willing to register while discouraging others from discovering the platform in the first place. This is the trade-off Reddit must solve.

Management has said that its tests will explore how much content should remain accessible before users encounter a sign-in requirement. It is also investing in app-install campaigns, improved feeds, personalization, video, and easier community discovery. The strategy is economically logical. Its success is not guaranteed.

7. Is Reddit’s competitive advantage sustainable?

Reddit possesses an unusual collection of assets. Its platform contains more than 27 billion posts and comments, built through two decades of user participation. Many discussions are highly specific, ranging from niche hobbies and professional software to personal financial decisions and obscure mechanical problems. That breadth gives Reddit a competitive advantage that is difficult to replicate by simply launching another discussion website.

The challenge for an imitator isn’t writing the software. It is attracting the communities, experienced contributors, moderators, and accumulated knowledge that make the software worth using. That resembles a network effect: more useful discussions attract more users, who contribute additional information, making the platform more valuable.

But the network effect has vulnerabilities. First, the quality of Reddit’s content depends on users continuing to contribute voluntarily. If commercial incentives, excessive advertising, or automated content degrade the experience, Reddit could weaken the very asset that differentiates it.

Second, AI systems are increasingly capable of summarizing the accumulated knowledge of online communities. They may not reproduce the experience of participating in a community, but they can potentially replace some information-seeking visits.

Third, Reddit must continue improving advertising effectiveness without undermining the trust users place in conversations that appear independent of commercial influence. The distinction between an authentic recommendation and a paid advertisement is fundamental to Reddit’s appeal. A platform that undermines that distinction risks sacrificing long-term user trust for short-term monetization.

8. What investors should watch next

Reddit’s third-quarter results establish that its advertising business has substantial monetization potential. The next few quarters should establish whether the company can protect and expand the audience that supports it. Four indicators deserve particular attention.

First, logged-in and app user growth. Aggregate daily active uniques are becoming less useful as a standalone measure. Investors should pay closer attention to whether Reddit’s most engaged users continue to grow, particularly in the United States.

Second, revenue growth relative to user growth. Continued ARPU expansion would demonstrate that Reddit is still improving its monetization capabilities. But it is important to determine how much growth comes from better advertiser results versus simply charging more for existing inventory.

Third, the results of the login experiments. The critical measure is not how many people are forced to register. It is whether the benefits of higher retention and monetization outweigh the users lost to additional friction.

Fourth, the economics of AI licensing and search traffic. Reddit should be evaluated on whether its content can support both a successful advertising business and an economically meaningful AI licensing business—without one undermining the other.

The bull case

Reddit becomes a habitual destination for hundreds of millions of users, continues closing the monetization gap with more mature advertising platforms, and earns additional revenue licensing its valuable content. Its high gross margins and relatively low capital intensity allow incremental revenue to translate into substantial cash flow.

The bear case

Google and other AI interfaces increasingly answer questions without sending users to Reddit. Reddit responds by making registration more restrictive, but this reduces new-user acquisition. Existing users remain valuable, yet audience expansion slows and advertising monetization eventually encounters diminishing returns. In this scenario, the company’s extraordinary recent growth rates prove difficult to sustain.

The bottom line

Reddit’s $895 million quarter demonstrates how valuable authentic human conversation can become when paired with a sophisticated advertising system. The company has more than doubled quarterly revenue in two years, substantially expanded profitability, and built a business capable of generating hundreds of millions of dollars in quarterly free cash flow.

But Thursday’s results also exposed an important distinction. Owning valuable content is not the same as controlling its distribution. And generating more revenue from existing users is not the same as securing the next generation of users.

Reddit’s greatest asset is the accumulated knowledge, participation, and trust of its communities. Its greatest strategic challenge is ensuring that people continue visiting those communities rather than consuming their knowledge somewhere else.

The next phase of Reddit’s story won’t be decided simply by how much information its users create. It will be decided by who captures the economic value of that information.

Sources and methodology

This analysis is based on publicly available disclosures as of the evening of October 29, 2026.
